Lapwing Estate Innovation Showcase
We were delighted to welcome guests to the first-ever Reverse Coal Open Day at The Lapwing Estate this week. The event was a chance to showcase the diverse range of research and innovation taking place on-site as we work to deliver our vision: rethinking how farmed lowland peat can be managed to meet the environmental, social, and food production challenges of the 21st century.
Visitors heard from our project team about the Reverse Coal concept—a radical whole-systems approach that transitions degraded peatland away from conventional agriculture towards climate-resilient, controlled environment agriculture (CEA). The approach integrates carbon sequestration, clean energy production, and sustainable food systems on the same land, offering a powerful model for land-use transformation.
The morning session featured presentations from our partners and researchers, followed by an interactive afternoon that included a hands-on carbon sequestration demonstration.
We extend our sincere thanks to our funders, partners, and supporters, including the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, DEFRA, Natural England, the Environment Agency, UKRI, and IDRIC. Their collaboration and belief in the Reverse Coal project are vital as we pioneer new pathways for sustainable land use and climate resilience.
