Reverse Coal included in the Midlands Engine Food White Paper

Lapwing’s Reverse Coal project has been showcased as a leading example of innovation in sustainable agriculture in the newly released Midlands Engine Food White Paper. The initiative is highlighted on page 20 as a national case study demonstrating how the UK’s food system can be transformed through bold thinking, climate action, and circular economy principles. The white paper, developed to shape policy and investment in the region’s agri-food sector, recognises Reverse Coal for its pioneering approach to carbon sequestration, clean energy generation, and regenerative food production. The project combines rewetting of lowland peat, biomass cultivation, and biochar production to deliver long-term climate benefits while supporting local food security. James Brown, CEO of Lapwing Estate and founder of Reverse Coal, welcomed the recognition: “This inclusion reflects years of hard work turning a climate challenge into a practical solution for farmers. We’re proud to contribute to reshaping how food is produced in the UK — sustainably, efficiently, and with carbon removal at its core.” The Midlands Engine’s endorsement reinforces Reverse Coal’s growing influence as a model for climate-smart farming across the UK and beyond.
